TOGETHER WE CAN.

Every fourth of February is the day set aside to mark World Cancer day. I’ve decided to put a piece about Cancer together. Its a few tips that can be helpful.

  •  Cancer was discovered by Egyptians as early as 1600 BC.
  •    An Oncologist is a trained cancer care giver.
  • There are more than 200 types and sub-types of cancer.
  • The most common types are lung, breast and prostate cancer.
  •  Studies have shown that breast cancer usually affects the left breast than the right breast.
  •    There has been a rise in skin cancer.
  •  Most skin cancer is caused by body creams.
  •    Cancer can also be hereditary.
  •    According to health experts, many times, cancers are preventable.

There are different ways to prevent cancer. One funny thing I noticed is that an average Nigeria acts like a medical practitioner.

A friend of mine told me cotton wool was stuck in her ear and all the “Power Rangers and Voltrons” came to her rescue. They prescribed water, oil and so many things. As usual, it didn’t work and she had to go to the clinic. (Talk about doing the first things last).

During the Ebola period here in Nigeria, some people prescribed drinking and bathing with salt water; someone told me that the centre of cabbage left outside for the dew was a cure for the Ebola virus when eaten.

Just imagine!

The whole point of these stories is to let you know that self medication isn’t the way out. Visit a health care provider, a health centre or a hospital with qualified doctors when you notice that something is right.

Other preventive measures include:
  •          Stick with healthy food and a balanced diet.
  •          Avoid smoking and as much as possible stay away from alcohol.
  •         Try to work out. It doesn’t have to be something that will wear you out. It’s simply something to put all your body parts in use and it can also put your weight in check.
  •          The sun is very happy to show her power these days. As much as you can, try to avoid it when it’s too hot. If you can’t avoid it, take a breather by staying out as soon as you can.
  •          Avoid processed or canned foods. If you have a choice, stick with foods that have no preservatives.
  •       If you work in a manufacturing company ensure that you stick to all safety protocols and procedures. Avoid living close to radio-active waves which is gotten from masts.
